Należał do najbardziej wpływowych muzyków nowoczesnego jazzu. Stał się wzorem dla całej armii alcistów oraz flecistów i praktycznie nie było klarnecisty basowego, który nie znalazłby się pod jego przemożnym wpływem. W każdym stylu miał do powiedzenia coś nowego i oryginalnego, obojętnie, czy była to stosunkowo ortodoksyjna muzyka Chico Hamiltona, eksperymenty freejazzowe Colemana, modalne improwizacje Johna Coltrane’a czy twórczość trzecionurtowa Gunthera Schullera. Mimo jednak głębokiego zintegrowania się z każdym stylem, zawsze pozostawał sobą, a jego improwizacje są rozpoznawane już po kilku dźwiękach (poprzez np. nagłe skoki interwałowe). Chociaż utożsamiany jest zwykle z nurtem freejazzowym, wniósł do niego wiele własnej refleksyjności i umiaru. Lepiej pasowałaby do niego etykieta twórcy, który poszerzył do granic możliwości tradycje bopowe.
