How smart are dolphins?

Anuschka de Rohan reviews the evidence, including an underwater-tv encounter between a dolphin and David Attenborough

At the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi, Kelly the dolphin has quite a reputation. All the institute's dolphins are trained to hold onto any litter that falls into their pools until they see a trainer, when they can trade the litter for fish. Kelly took this task one step further. When people drop paper into the water she hides it under a rock at the bottom of the pool.

The next time a trainer passes, she tears off a piece of paper to give to the trainer. After a fish-reward, she goes back down, tears off another piece of paper, gets another fish, and so on. This behaviour is particularly interesting because it suggests that Kelly has a sense of the future and delays gratification. She has, in effect, trained the humans.

Problem-soving with tools

Despite their lack of hands, dolphins can also use tools to solve problems. Scientists have observed a dolphin trying to get a reluctant moray eel to come out of its crevice by poking it with the spiny body of a dead scorpionfish. In Australia, bottlenose dolphins place sponges over their snouts as protection from the spines of stonefish and stingrays as they forage over shallow seabeds.

Many species of dolphin live in complex societies. To keep track of the many different relationships within a large social group, it helps to have an efficient communication system. Dolphins use a variety of clicks and whistles to keep in touch. There is currently no evidence that dolphins have a language of their own. But we've barely begun to record all their sounds and body signals let alone try to decipher them, and so there are certain to be a few surprises in store.

Communicating with sign language

At Kewalo Basin Marine Laboratory in Hawaii, Lou Herman and his team have developed a sign language to communicate with the dolphins, and the results are remarkable. Not only do the dolphins understand the meaning of individual words, they also understand the significance of word order in a sentence. For example, they generally responded correctly straight away to "touch the frisbee with your tail and then jump over it." This has the characteristics of true under- standing, not rigid training.

In the BBC programme Wildlife on One: Dolphins - Deep Thinkers?, one of Lou Herman's dolphins, Akeakamai, watches David Attenborough on an underwater tv screen. No one could predict how she would react, but as soon as David appeared on the screen, she responded correctly to his sign language, and even had a go at imitating him.

Despite inhabiting a very different world to ourselves, dolphins perform brilliantly in our 'intelligence tests'. There is still much to learn about these flexible problem-solvers, but from the evidence so far, it seems that dolphins do indeed deserve their reputation for being highly intelligent.

The Planets

Information

While watching The Planets, be prepared to fight your way past all kinds of computer animation which makes Walking with Dinosaurs seem like the last word in realism. It seems that no solar or planetary event which ever happened (or which may or may not have happened) is worthy of mention here without recourse to lovingly detailed shots of implausible-looking collisions and explosions. These come complete with sound effects, despite the fact that there is no sound in the vacuum of space, and are enhanced by a range of colours, some of which are visible only to bees. Somehow Patrick Moore's The Sky at Night manages to convey just as much excitement with little more than a couple of diagrams and the presenter's hyperactive enthusiasm. Fortunately, this two-DVD set is redeemed by both its subject matter and its sheer scope, offering all eight 50-minute episodes of the 1999 documentary series covering the history of the solar system and humanity's age-old desire to learn its secrets. Detailed indexing and scene access makes this a convenient reference source too, so amateur astronomers everywhere can finally bin those off-air VHS copies.

Contains all eight episodes from the series:- 'Different Worlds', 'Moon', 'Terra Firma', 'Giants', 'Star', 'Atmosphere', 'Destiny' and 'Life'.

BBC State of the Planet (2000)

Information

Everywhere you turn there is confusion about the current state of our planet; with talk of rainforest destruction, global warming, extinction of species, rising sea levels and drought. In this series David Attenborough brings his matter-of-fact clarity to the subject, investigating the latest scientific research to explain the situation in simple terms for the first time.

Over the course of three programmes, his quest takes him on a truly global trail, from Kenya to Ecuador, from the Phillipines and the Maldives to Easter Island, and from South Africa to California.

Deep Blue

Information

Deep Blue is an epic cinematic roller coaster ride whose images will mesmerise viewers with their beauty and stun them with their grandeur. Intensifying the film's impact is a new, full orchestral score composed specifically for Deep Blue by five-time Oscar nominee George Fenton (Gandhi, Cry Freedom) and recorded by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - their first ever recording of a film score. The film is narrated by acclaimed film and stage actor Michael Gambon.

One of the most singular and comprehensive projects ever undertaken in the field of documentary filmmaking, Deep Blue plunges the audience into the spectacle of the seas and takes it on a journey from the shallowest coral reefs to the barren shores of the Antarctic, from the vast stretches of the open ocean to the nocturnal landscapes of the ocean's deepest chasms. Director Alastair Fothergill comments: "We take you to a world you have never seen before, to what I believe is genuinely the last frontier on our planet.

Despite the fact that the sea constitutes two-thirds of our planet, we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the deep oceans. Now, for the first time ever, it is possible to explore a world few have ever seen. From the familiar to the unknown, Deep Blue reveals the sea and its communities at their most enchanting, alluring and fierce. Directors Alastair Fothergill and Andy Byatt assembled 20 specialised camera teams, shot over 7,000 hours of footage in more than 200 locations around the world for more than 5 years, and descended as far as 5,000 meters in the most powerful submersible crafts. New species of ocean dwellers were discovered, and many photographed for the first time ever.

The makers of the successful BBC series "The Blue Planet" have selected the most stunning images and the most captivating sequences, together with new and unseen footage, to create an unforgettable cinematic experience and an event movie for all ages.

Time Machine

Information

Imagine if you could play with time. Where would you go, what would you see? Imagine no longer, Time Machine breaks through the time barrier and takes you on an incredible journey to see the world as you have never seen it before.

As time is crushed from centuries into seconds, we can see the shaping of the planet. Watch the mighty Himalayas and the Grand Canyon form in front of your very eyes and discover the hidden forces that created them. See why crocodiles
became stranded when the Sahara turned to desert; and what mysterious
force shaped the Great Sphinx. The length of our live limits our understanding of time and the way we see our planet, but if we warp time we can begin to reveal what is really going on.

We witness the forces that are tearing our continents apart, and discover the shocking fact that millions of people all over the world are sitting on geological
time bombs.

Synopsis

Time Machine unlocks the secrets of our turbulent planet. Computer graphics and striking time-lapse images show the dramatic physical changes of the Earth and its life forms over the millions of years since time began. From dramatic changes in prehistory to the variations in the planet’s landscape and environment during the last century, Time Machine is the compelling story of time on the Earth.

Saint Paul

Saint Paul explores the remarkable story of a man whose teachings have done so much to shape our lives. An enthusiastic persecutor of the early Church, his missionary zeal ended up transforming the Christian world.

World champion triple-jumper and Songs of Praise presenter Jonathan Edwards takes viewers on a dramatic journey across the Mediterranean in the steps of this itinerant preacher.

St Paul, more that anyone else, transformed Christianity from a small Jewish sect into a global religion. This documentary dramatises his incredible adventure as he survives stonings, imprisonment, floggings, riots and shipwrecks to take Jesus' message to the world.
St Paul Script

Paul started life as Saul, an enemy of Jesus and a hit man for the Jewish authorities. He was traveling to Damascus to hunt down the growing Christian movement when he had a religious experience and was transformed into the Church's greatest champion.

The programme looks at the miracle of the conversion, whether Paul did actually meet God on the road to Damascus or whether his religious vision could have been triggered by an epileptic fit. Some scientists and sufferers now even believe that epilepsy may confer an ability to access a spiritual dimension beyond our physical world.

For Jonathan Edwards, the programme presented an opportunity to explore the life of one of his great heroes: "When Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus it changed his life. And that event changed my life and it's changed all our lives whether we believe or not. And surely that's the greatest miracle of this story. Not the earthquakes or the jailbreaks, not even the dramatic conversion experience; but the power and persistence of his message."
