To pierwszy długometrażowy film zrealizowany przez Davida Lyncha, byłego studenta malarstwa. Zainteresowanie malarstwem reżysera silnie odbiło się na filmie. Eraserhead to surrealistyczny czarno-biały obraz, operujący w znacznym stopniu, karykaturą, groteska i bogatą symboliką. Kojarzyć się może z "Psem andaluzyjskim" Bunuela. Jest to historia Harrego Spencera, żyjącego w zurbanizowanym mieście, gdzie panuje wszechogarniający hałas. Główny bohater poznaje Mary X, w której się zakochuje. Ta rodzi mu osobliwego potomka - poczwarkę o główce przypominającą głowę dinozaura i spłaszczonym tułowiu (stąd pewnie niektórzy tłumaczą Eraserhead jako "Głowę na patelni"). Harry opuszczony przez żonę, która nie wytrzymuje ciągłego wycia "dziecka", zmuszony jest sam zaopiekować się małym mutantem.
