 Historia zawodów UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) zaczęła się 12 listopada 1993 roku, kiedy to w "McNichols Arena" w amerykańskim mieście Denver (stan Colorado), Brazylijczyk Rorion Gracie, zorganizował pierwsze Ultimate Fighting Championship, mające na celu wyłonienie najlepszego zawodnika świata bez podziału na styl walki. Na otoczonej siatką, ośmiokątnej arenie, spotkało się ośmiu przedstawicieli ośmiu różnych stylów walki (boks, kick-boxing, judo, sumo, kung fu, savate, ju jitsu, shootfighting) Nie było podziału na kategorie wagowe, najlżejszy zawodnik ważył ok. 60 kg, natomiast najcięższy ponad cztery razy tyle. Nie było również podziału na rundy, co podkreślało charakter vale tudo zawodów. Zasady? Były znikome - zakaz ataku na oczy, krtań, kręgosłup, zakaz gryzienia. Zawody bezapelacyjnie wygrał reprezentant brazylijskiego ju jitsu Royce Gracie, który wygrywał praktycznie nie zadając ciosów - swoich rywali zmuszał do poddania się zakładając im dźwignie i duszenia. Zawody odniosły wielki sukces komercyjny, co pozwoliło na ich powtórzenie i kilka miesięcy później Royce potwierdził swoją supremację wygrywając UFC II. W kolejnej zaś edycji ponownie dotarł do finału, jednakże po zwycięskiej półfinałowej walce z cięższym o połowę Kimo Leopoldo, na skutek ciężkiej kontuzji, nie był w stanie walczyć dalej. Dziś gale UFC cieszą się ogromną popularnością na świecie, a oglądalność nieustannie rośnie. link do folderu: Kod:
