Grand Ages: Rome jest kolejną częścią historycznej strategii czasu rzeczywistego Imperium Romanum, autorstwa bułgarskiego studia Haemimont Games. Twórcy ci maja na swoim koncie także kilka innych tego typu produkcji, stworzyli między innymi nawiązujące do czasów świetności Rzymskiego Imperium Nemesis of the Roman Empire oraz Glory of the Roman Empire.

W grze wcielamy się w rolę patrycjusza, który dopiero co rozpoczyna swoją polityczną karierę. Jednak w miarę upływu czasu zaczynamy zdobywać coraz większe poparcie, aż w końcu uda się nam osiągnąć główny cel, czyli przejąć kontrolę nad całym Rzymem. W dotarciu do władzy pomocnym może okazać się wykonywanie zadań dla znanych z kart historii postaci, takich jak między innymi Juliusz Cezar, Pompejusz, czy Oktawian. Oczywiście i tak, podobnie jak w pierwowzorze, przez większość czasu musimy po prostu dbać o bezpieczeństwo i rozwój kontrolowanego przez nas obszaru. A zagrozić nam mogą nie tylko wrogie armie, lecz również generowane w sposób losowy klęski żywiołowe, na przykład plagi, trzęsienia ziemi i pożary. Ponadto nasze miasto zawsze posiada pewien status (na przykład oblężenie, głód, możliwe zamieszki), który powinniśmy brać pod uwagę przy planowaniu dalszych działań.

W sumie w czasie kampanii przemierzymy dwadzieścia misji rozgrywających się w historycznych lokacjach. Do naszej dyspozycji oddanych zostało około sześćdziesięciu różnych budowli, w tym także Koloseum, Panteon, Circus Maximus i ponad pięćdziesiąt odmiennych jednostek, które możemy formować w większe oddziały. Zresztą w porównaniu z częścią pierwszą system ekonomii i zarządzania armią został o wiele lepiej rozwiązany.

W Grand Ages: Rome swoich sił możemy spróbować nie tylko w kampanii dla jednego gracza, ale też w pojedynczych scenariuszach i trybie multiplayer pozwalającym na współpracę lub rywalizację pomiędzy uczestnikami zabawy. Co ciekawe wszystkie przywileje, które zdobyliśmy podczas fabularyzowanej kampanii mają wpływ nie tylko na kolejne jej misje, ale także pozostałe tryby rozgrywki.

W stosunku do poprzednika znacznie lepiej prezentuje się oprawa graficzna. Jak zwykle Haemimont Games zadbało o to, aby wygląd jednostek i budynków był zgodny z historycznymi realiami.
